America's Great Loop or "The Great Loop" as it is often referred to, is an all water circumnavigational route around the eastern half of the United States and Canada. Depending on the route taken it can be between 6,000 - 7,000 miles. The route we plan to take on "MS Victory" is the 6,000 mile route staying within the United States. The route is scheduled to take 3 months to complete. As an MS sufferer, I know this will be a challenge.
My wife and I plan to sail The Great Loop to inspire others with Multiple Sclerosis. We will meet with various media ( newspaper, radio, & TV) for interviews at ports of call. We will also meet with local MS chapters along the way and talk with those who suffer from this disease. The theme of this sail is "Boating for a Cure." We hope that through ongoing research, one day there will be a cure for this debilitating disease, but until then, we must win the fight on a daily basis against pain, depression and immobility. We want to illustrate the message that a diagnosis of MS doesn't have to mean an end of your quality of life.
Our Mission
Our mission is to take a 34' boat around The Great Loop in an effort to inspire all who suffer with a disability, to raise awareness of MS, and explain new treatments and advancements toward a cure for this debilitating disease.
The fact that I will be the first Looper, piloting a vessel with MS makes this voyage unique in itself.
We will stop at ports of call along the loop and speak with area MS chapter members and will promote this voyage vigorously. Through the attention of national and regional media we want to send the message, “Don’t dream your life, live your dreams!”
The theme of this voyage is “Boating for a Cure.” Great strides are being made toward a cure for MS, but until we win the fight, we must continue to support research and development. And that takes funding. When you support the MS Victory voyage, your donation is tax deductible. And you can know that your donations will go to support MS and its treatmeants.
“Do you or someone you know suffer with Multiple Sclerosis?” I ask that because 500,000 Americans today are suffering with MS today. Every week 200 more people are diagnosed with MS. Maybe you know a friend or a loved one who struggles each day just to walk through the house because of MS. Maybe you know someone who has to use braces or a wheelchair just to function normally. Maybe someone you know has been bed-ridden because MS is taking the life from them.
There is hope, I was in a wheel-chair, unable to form thoughts into words of understanding, yet today, I have broken so many barriers that MS has thrown up in front of me. With the advancement of medication in the last few years I have been able to get out of my wheelchair among other things that MS has brought my way.
